Masked Self-Portraits

Colour photographs, each approximately 16 x 12cm; custom-made window mounts; wooden frames, each 50 x 40cm

These are a series of photographs, taken in the Royal Museum for Central Africa, Brussels, of various ceremonial masks collected from tribes in the central African region. In photographing them in their glass-fronted display cases in such a manner that my own reflection is aligned with the mask, these works are part of a series which considers how one might represent the culture of another, and how such displays separate even as they allow a curious form of identification between viewer and object.
Each photograph is printed full-frame and placed centrally within the frame, and is then cropped using custom-made window mounts, thereby emphasising the act of framing and isolation both within the work, and in that which it represents.
